How to Teach Kids to Tie Their Laces

Tying shoelaces is a very demanding challenge for both children and parents. Of course, every case is different, with some children finding it easier and others finding it more difficult. The result however is the same, since, no matter how convenient kids’ shoes with Velcro are, sooner or later children will have to learn to tie their laces. This responsibility naturally falls on parents, who often get confused themselves, not knowing effective ways to teach that to children. So below we’ll take a look at some tips that will untie your hands and… tie your shoelaces!!

Say yes to practice
It may sound typical, but it is effective. Encourage children to practice as much as possible with their shoelaces, and to not stop trying if they don’t get it right the first or second time. The repetition of the movement, following your instructions, will be imprinted in their minds.

Make it fun
Choose kids’ shoes with colorful laces or add them yourself so that the kids can tell them apart. Use a wooden board or cardboard and string to create a practicing game by tying pairs of pieces of string onto the board or cardboard. You can even get ideas from videos online. The more fun the process becomes, the easier it will be for children to learn.

Choose suitable laces
If the kids’ shoes you’ve bought have laces made of synthetic material that slips or very thin laces, change them with something that kids can grab and tie more easily.

Give it time
For each child this learning process takes a different amount of time, so don’t rush them to see quick results. Give them time to practice, fail, try again, etc. Show them that while it’s good for them to learn to tie their shoelaces, it won’t be the end of the world if it takes a little longer to do so. This will give them the comfort and confidence they need to succeed.
